New Delhi: A forceful appeal for a clear and time-bound roadmap to rehabilitate Manipur’s internally displaced families dominated a Zero Hour intervention in the Lok Sabha on Friday. Manipur MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam said thousands of people are still living in relief camps more than a year after the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023.

Speaking in Manipuri, Akoijam urged the Centre to present a credible plan that guarantees a safe and dignified return for all displaced residents. He warned that the crisis must not be allowed to drag into a third year, adding that the prolonged displacement and the authorities’ slow response have eroded public trust.

The MP alleged that security forces used excessive force against displaced people during recent protests demanding rehabilitation. Such incidents, he said, weaken efforts to reach a durable and acceptable solution.

Akoijam further claimed that the prevailing situation seems to reflect the demands of certain Kuki groups opposed to resettlement initiatives. He accused individuals with vested interests of obstructing the return of affected families and criticised what he described as administrative irresponsibility that has allowed the humanitarian crisis to deepen.

He pressed the Government to adopt firm, transparent and immediate measures to ensure that displaced families can finally begin rebuilding their lives without further delay.
