Silchar: Cachar police on Thursday arrested Jayanta Prasad Das, also known as Dr. J.P. Das, identified as the mastermind behind the fake doctors’ racket operating in the district.
Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta confirmed that Das is the 14th person to be arrested in the ongoing crackdown. He allegedly ran a fraudulent institution called the National Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Silchar, which issued fake medical certificates to unqualified individuals.
Investigators suspect that Das’s own medical degree is fake. According to police, he reportedly studied in Bangladesh and does not hold any recognised qualification from an Indian medical institution.
Das owned several establishments in Silchar, including Mawsumi Hospital, Parijat Restaurant, and Geno Spa and Therapy Centre. Police allege these were involved in multiple illegal activities, including prostitution.
SSP Mahatta said the forged certificates issued by Das and his associates may have reached other states, allowing many to practise medicine without legitimate credentials. He added that police are continuing efforts to trace all individuals linked to the racket and verify the extent of its operations.
