Silchar: As part of a nationwide protest call by the All India Electricity Consumers Association, a memorandum was submitted in Silchar to the Union Minister of Power through the District Commissioner, opposing the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
In the memorandum, signed by Ajay Acharjee and Hillol Bhattacharjee, conveners of the AAECA, the proposed bill was described as anti consumer and a violation of the Electricity Act, 2003. The memorandum stated that the amendment would transform electricity into a market commodity by placing profit above public interest, which could adversely affect ordinary consumers, farmers and small scale users.
The memorandum further alleged that the bill would accelerate the privatization of power distribution, which could disrupt the supply of electricity and weaken public control over essential services.
Through the memorandum, the association demanded that the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025 be withdrawn. It also urged the government to consult all stakeholders before introducing any future changes to the electricity law.
Dipankar Chanda, Paritosh Bhattacharjee and Khadeja Begum Laskar and others were present during the submission of the memorandum. The organisation stated that it would continue its efforts to safeguard the rights and interests of electricity consumers.
