Silchar: Amid growing concerns about extremist movement and illegal cross-border activity, the District Commissioner of Cachar, Mridul Yadav, has issued a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The order is intended to maintain peace and prevent the illegal transport of goods and cattle in sensitive areas along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

The order restricts all movement between sunset and sunrise within a one-kilometre stretch of the Indo-Bangladesh border in Cachar district. Similar restrictions apply to the Surma River and its high banks within Indian territory during the same hours.

Boating for fishing has also been prohibited, except when special permission is granted by the Circle Officer of Katigorah for personal use. Such permission requires consultation with the lessee and prior intimation to both the District Commissioner and the Commandant of the 170th Battalion, BSF, Dholcherra.

Additionally, the transport of essential commodities—such as sugar, rice, wheat, edible oil, kerosene, and salt—is banned between sunset and sunrise within five kilometres of the border. In exceptional cases, the Circle Officer may approve limited movement after verifying the necessity with local supply officials. All such permissions must be reported to the District Commissioner and the BSF Commandant.

The order, issued ex parte in the interest of public safety, takes effect immediately and will remain valid for two months unless withdrawn or modified earlier. It does not apply to State or Central Government personnel on official duty in the border zone.

Mridul Yadav stated that these measures are preventive and meant to preserve peace, ensure public safety, and curb any potential threat to national security in the border areas.
