Cross-border operation targets insurgent strongholds amid intelligence on regrouping activity

KRC TIMES Assam Bureau

Guwahati : In a major counter-insurgency move, Indian security forces reportedly carried out precision strikes on camps of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) across the Myanmar border. The operation, conducted over the weekend, targeted key hideouts believed to be harbouring senior ULFA-I leaders and cadres

Though official confirmation from the Indian Army remains limited due to the sensitivity of the operation, highly placed sources indicated that the strikes were based on specific intelligence inputs about militant regrouping and training activities in the dense jungles along the Indo-Myanmar frontier.“

“Assam has been placed on high alert in the aftermath of the operation, with security tightened across vulnerable districts including Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and Sivasagar. Additional forces have been deployed along the inter-state and international borders, and surveillance has been intensified to prevent any retaliatory strikes or infiltration attempts by insurgents.

There is no room for complacency. All necessary precautions are being taken to ensure public safety and maintain law and order,” a senior Assam Police official told reporters.

The ULFA-I, led by fugitive commander Paresh Baruah, has long used Myanmar’s Sagaing Region as a strategic base of operations. The group has been accused of orchestrating several attacks on security forces and economic infrastructure in Upper Assam over the years.

Reports suggest that the recent strikes may have inflicted significant damage on at least two major ULFA-I installations. Unconfirmed sources also hinted at possible casualties among the insurgent ranks, including some senior operatives.

The Ministry of Home Affairs and the Defence Ministry have so far maintained silence on the developments, though strategic analysts say the move aligns with India’s zero-tolerance policy towards cross-border militancy.

Meanwhile, the Assam government has appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies. “This is a proactive measure to protect our state from extremist threats. The people of Assam have suffered enough due to insurgency and deserve peace,” a state official said.

This is not the first time Indian forces have taken action beyond the border. Similar strikes were carried out in 2015 targeting Naga rebel camps in Myanmar following deadly ambushes on Indian soldiers.““As the situation continues to evolve, security watchers will be closely monitoring any potential fallout or response from ULFA-I or allied Northeast insurgent outfits believed to operate in the region.
