Silchar witnesses major turnout

Silchar: Trade unions and farmers’ groups across the country held protests on Wednesday urging the Centre to scrap the four labour codes that replaced 29 earlier laws. In Silchar, the demonstration drew a sizeable crowd as five central trade unions and several farmers’ bodies gathered near the Khudiram Bose statue. Organisers estimated the turnout at close to five hundred.

Speakers accused the BJP-led government of pushing policies that dilute long-standing protections for workers. They said the new framework allows companies to stretch the workday from eight to twelve hours and leaves key social security benefits like PF and gratuity on shaky ground.
Several leaders cautioned that the agitation would escalate if the codes are not withdrawn.
Mihir Nandi, Shyamdeo Karmi, Ranjan Das, Subhas Deb, Surojit Ghosh and Supriya Bhattacharjee addressed the gathering. The protest ended with participants burning copies of the labour codes to signal their rejection.
