Sribhumi: The Malegarh War Memorial at Latu in Karimganj district stood quiet and solemn on Monday as members of the North East Integration Rally (NEIR) paid tribute to unsung heroes of India’s first war of independence.

On the occasion of the 77th Republic Day, the NEIR team, led by its managing trustee and CEO Biswadeep Gupta, visited the historic site near the India Bangladesh border.
The memorial honours 26 Indian soldiers of the 34th Native Infantry who laid down their lives during the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny.
The martyrs were killed while resisting British forces led by Major Byng. Their bodies were later cremated at the very spot where the memorial now stands. The place remains a powerful reminder of early resistance against colonial rule in the Barak Valley region.
During the visit, the NEIR members offered floral tributes and observed a moment of silence to honour the sacrifice of the sepoys. Silchar Press Club general secretary Shankar Dey and noted cultural activist Bhaskar Das were also present at the programme.
Shankar Dey described the visit as a gesture to remember forgotten chapters of the freedom struggle and to pass their legacy on to future generations.
