Silchar: In a heartening gesture of civic unity and patriotic spirit, several local organisations and businesspersons have collectively donated Rs.55,000 to support the reconstruction of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose statue at Rangirkhari Point in Silchar.

The statue, a prominent symbol of India’s freedom struggle, will be reinstalled on August 24 in a grand ceremony to be attended by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The cheque handover took place on Wednesday at the site, where members of the contributing groups formally presented their donations to Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty and social worker Rudra Narayan Gupta.

The contributions included Rs.10,000 each from the Silchar Wholesale Co-operative Society (represented by President Basudev Sharma), Ashram Road Yuba Sammelani, and Bilpar Unnayan Sanstha. Tulika Arts founder Gopal Roy extended support with Rs.5,000, while businessman Shantanu Roy and his wife Diya Roy jointly donated Rs.20,000.

Speaking at the occasion, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty hailed the initiative as a symbol of Silchar’s collective pride and patriotism. “August 24 will mark a historic moment for our town.

With the heartfelt support of the people, we are not only rebuilding a statue, but reaffirming our commitment to the ideals of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. I invite all residents to join us on this special day and make it a memorable occasion,” he said.

The upcoming ceremony will also see the revival of the Rotary structure at the junction, adding aesthetic and cultural value to the area.

Others present at the event included Sanjay Roy, Kajal Roy (Vice-President, BJP Silchar Mandal), Basudev Sharma, Gopal Roy, and Shantanu Roy.
