KOHIMA: In a historic development that cements regional political unity in Nagaland, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) has formally endorsed the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party’s (NDPP) decision to merge, following the NDPP’s unanimous resolution on Saturday.

The endorsement came during an emergency meeting of the NPF Central Executive Council (CEC) held at 1:30 p.m. at the party’s central office in Kohima, where members unanimously adopted resolutions supporting the merger.

At the NDPP’s Sixth General Convention, held earlier today at the Capital Cultural Hall, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and NDPP President Chingwang Konyak led party leaders, legislators, and delegates in approving the merger proposal, describing it as a “new beginning” for Naga unity and progress.

“This merger is not an end but a continuation of our collective journey toward peace, unity, and development,” Chief Minister Rio said. “It represents the coming together of all regional forces for the greater Naga cause.”

The NPF’s CEC, in its resolution, stated that after thorough deliberation, it endorsed the NDPP resolution and ratified the Central Office Bearers (COB) Resolution No. 1, in accordance with the party’s constitution.

The council also appreciated the NDPP leadership for taking a “bold and right decision” to strengthen the regional front and commended Dr. Neiphiu Rio’s sagacity and guidance in arriving at a consensus for the merger.

“The CEC reiterates its commitment for an early, acceptable, honourable, and inclusive solution to the Indo-Naga political issue,” the resolution read.

Formed in 2017 with the motto “Deeds, Not Words,” the NDPP rose to power through consecutive electoral victories in alliance with the BJP. The NPF, founded in 1963, remains the oldest regional political party in the Northeast.

Political observers say the merger, now endorsed by both parties, marks the full consolidation of Naga regional politics, uniting two dominant forces under one banner. The unified party is expected to play a decisive role in governance and in advancing efforts toward resolving the long-pending Naga political issue.
