Guwahati: Dilip Saikia on Wednesday termed Pradyut Bordoloi joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) a “huge setback” for the Indian National Congress, saying the move reflects growing dissatisfaction within the opposition party.

Speaking to reporters, Saikia said Bordoloi’s decision to switch sides carries political significance because of his stature and influence in Assam politics. “Pradyut Bordoloi’s joining the BJP is sending a big message. Such a leader not staying in Congress is a huge setback,” he said.

Saikia further claimed that the development highlights internal issues within the Congress. “Nobody with self-respect wants to stay with Congress,” he added.

Echoing similar views, BJP leader Diganta Kalita said Bordoloi’s defection would weaken the Congress significantly in the state.

Political observers believe the development could have an impact on Assam’s political landscape ahead of upcoming electoral contests, as parties look to strengthen their positions.
