Silchar : In a moment of pride for Cachar district and the Barak Valley, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Cachar, Numal Mahatta, has been awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day. The award, given for integrity, efficiency, and dedication in policing, reflects SSP Mahatta’s exemplary leadership and the collective efforts of Cachar Police.
Expressing gratitude, SSP Mahatta described the honour as “a collective achievement of my team.” He said, “Our officers work day and night under challenging conditions—whether it’s crime prevention, disaster response, or ensuring community safety. This recognition belongs to every officer who serves the people of Cachar.”

Since taking charge, SSP Mahatta has strengthened crime-control strategies, improved intelligence networks, and fostered police-community trust.
His tenure has seen decisive action against organised crime, narcotics trafficking, and cross-border smuggling, alongside public awareness drives on drug abuse, cyber safety, and traffic discipline.
The MHA also recognised two officers from the 6th Assam Police Battalion (APBn), Kathal—Assistant Commandant Nabin Ch. Sharma and ABSI Rabindra Singha.
Assistant Commandant Sharma, who joined the force in 1988, is known for his dedication to law-and-order duties, especially in supervising Border Outpost Platoons in remote inter-state areas. Over his career, he has received 98 rewards, including the Swatantrata ki Swarna Jayanti Padak from the President of India in 2002.

ABSI Singha, in service since 1991, is valued for his administrative expertise and disciplined work as a Reserve Officer. His unblemished record includes 73 monetary rewards and three commendations from various authorities.
Senior police officials describe SSP Mahatta as a leader who “leads from the front” and “values his team,” crediting him with improving police-public relations in Cachar.
As the nation celebrates Independence Day, these honours stand as a testament to the unwavering service and dedication of Cachar Police, inspiring continued efforts toward a safer and more trusting society.
