Silchar: Ushering in a new era for higher education in Barak Valley, the historic Gurucharan College has been officially upgraded to Gurucharan University. In a milestone moment, Prof. Dr. Niranjan Roy assumed office on Monday as the university’s first Vice-Chancellor, taking over from Dr. Apratim Nag, the former in-charge principal of Gurucharan College.

This significant transition marks the beginning of a new chapter for the 90-year-old institution, fulfilling the long-standing aspirations of students, faculty, and the broader community.

A brief ceremonial event was held to mark the formal handover, during which Dr. Roy shared his vision for the newly established university. “I feel deeply honoured to be entrusted with this responsibility,” he said. “Building a university is akin to nurturing a garden from the ground up. Despite the resource constraints, we are committed to a phased, thoughtful, and sustainable growth.”

Dr. Roy clarified that students admitted in the current academic session (2025–26) will be enrolled under Gurucharan University. However, the Assam University curriculum will continue temporarily. Students in their final year or other continuing batches will complete their degrees under Assam University.

Looking ahead, the Vice-Chancellor announced plans to roll out postgraduate and research programmes, as well as integrated courses starting from the next academic session—aligned with the guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He also said that statutory bodies such as the Executive Council, Academic Council, and Board of Studies will be formed within the next six months.

During the transitional phase, the university will function from the existing Gurucharan College campus. Renovation and upgradation plans are underway to meet university-level standards. Administrative and academic responsibilities will temporarily be handled by the current faculty until formal recruitment begins.

The atmosphere on campus was one of pride and optimism, as faculty and staff expressed heartfelt enthusiasm for the institution’s new journey. With a rich legacy behind it and a transformative path ahead, Gurucharan University now aims to emerge as a leading centre of academic excellence in South Assam.
