Kolkata: R. N. Ravi has been appointed as the new Governor of West Bengal following the sudden resignation of C. V. Ananda Bose. The appointment was made by President Droupadi Murmu on March 6 as part of a wider reshuffle of governors across the country.

Ravi is expected to assume office on March 12. The oath of office will be administered by Sujoy Paul, Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. The post fell vacant after Bose stepped down on March 5, bringing his tenure as governor to an end after serving since November 2022.

Before his transfer to Bengal, Ravi served as the Governor of Tamil Nadu from 2021 until March 2026. A 1976-batch Indian Police Service officer, he earlier held several key positions in the security establishment, including Deputy National Security Advisor. He also played a major role as the Government of India’s interlocutor in the Naga peace talks.

The appointment comes at a politically sensitive time, with the state preparing for the 2026 Assembly elections. The change in Raj Bhavan has already triggered sharp political reactions and debate between the state government and the Centre.

Ravi’s arrival is expected to mark a new phase in the relationship between the Raj Bhavan and the government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
