Silchar: Dr. Amit Kalwar, a well-known Internal Medicine Specialist from Silchar, has made his political debut by joining the Indian National Congress (INC). He formally joined the party on October 11, in Guwahati, in the presence of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi.
When Dr. Kalwar returned to Silchar on October 13, he was greeted with an impressive show of support—a massive rally that drew thousands of people and around 2,000 vehicles, turning the event into one of the most talked-about political moments in the Barak Valley.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Kalwar said his decision to enter politics comes from a desire to work for the comprehensive development of the region. His entry has generated intense speculation that he may contest the 2026 Assembly elections, with many expecting him to run from the Borkhola constituency.
