Silchar: Rail connectivity between Mizoram and Assam received a major push on Monday with the flagging off of the new Sairang–Silchar train service. The service was formally launched by Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw through video conferencing.

On the same occasion, new passenger facilities at Guwahati railway station were also inaugurated, aimed at improving comfort and convenience for travellers.

The new train service is expected to ease travel between Mizoram and southern Assam and strengthen economic and social ties between the two states.

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma attended the programme, along with Assam Minister Kaushik Rai, Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya, Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha, Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, and other officials and dignitaries.

Speakers highlighted that improved rail infrastructure will boost trade, tourism, and people-to-people contact in the Northeast. The initiative is part of the ongoing effort to expand railway connectivity in the region and bring remote areas closer to the national network.
