Silchar: On Wednesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Cachar District unit observed Samvidhan Hatya Diwas to mark the anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency on June 25, 1975. The programme, held to commemorate what the party describes as one of the darkest chapters in Indian democracy, saw the participation of several key leaders, including Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty.
The event served as a reminder of the curtailment of civil liberties during the Emergency declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which led to the arrest and imprisonment of thousands of activists and political opponents.
A keynote address was delivered by Gauranga Roy, Pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), South Assam Prant, who elaborated on the situation of the country during the Emergency and the challenges faced by nationalist organizations and their workers.
BJP Cachar District President Rupam Saha presided over the event. Notable dignitaries present on the occasion included MP Parimal Suklabaidya, former MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy, Nitya Bhusan Dey, and newly elected BJP Assam Pradesh Co-Vice President Moon Swarnakar, among others.
The speakers emphasised the need to uphold constitutional values and remain vigilant against any attempts to undermine democracy. The program concluded with a call to the younger generation to learn from history and remain committed to the principles of the Constitution.
