Silchar: As the Silchar Municipal Corporation elections approach, the Assam State Election Commission (SEC) has stepped up preparations, with State Election Commissioner Ranjan Sharma leading a crucial review meeting with the Cachar district administration and senior police officials on Monday.
Held at the newly inaugurated conference hall of the District Commissioner’s office, the meeting served as a key platform to assess the district’s preparedness for the upcoming municipal elections. A 15-slide presentation detailed the roadmap covering every aspect of the election process from deployment of polling and counting personnel to ballot box security, transport logistics, maintenance of law and order, and readiness of strong rooms and counting halls.
Welcoming the State Election Commissioner, District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, outlined the ground-level measures already in place. The review was attended by DIG of Police Kankanjyoti Saikia, Secretary to the SEC Gitartha Baruah, District Development Commissioner Norsing Bey, Additional District Commissioner Dhrubajyoti Pathak, and Election Officer Masi Topno.
In a noteworthy show of preparedness, all 42 Registration Officers from the municipal wards were also present signalling a clear emphasis on ward-level accountability and coordination.
A major focus of the discussion was the integrity of the electoral rolls. Commissioner Sharma underlined the importance of error-free draft voter lists and directed officials to promptly correct discrepancies to ensure that no eligible voter is excluded and no duplicate entries remain.
Law and order preparedness was discussed in detail, with the DIG presenting plans to ensure peaceful conduct of the elections. The SEC was assured that strong rooms and counting centres would be equipped with adequate security, surveillance, and personnel.
The review underscored the commitment of both the SEC and the Cachar administration to conduct a free, fair, and transparent election. With directives now reaching the grassroots level, officials expressed confidence that the Silchar civic polls could serve as a model for other municipal elections across Assam.
The upcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation election is expected to reflect robust administrative planning, enhanced voter trust, and seamless coordination between the state and district machinery.
