Silchar: Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya on Saturday urged district officials to adopt a people-first approach in governance, reminding them that “one who loves humanity serves God.”

Chairing a high-level review meeting with heads of departments at the Conference Hall of the District Commissioner’s office, Acharya stressed that administration must function holistically to ensure maximum benefits for the common people. “The chair you hold is a position of trust. Use your authority to touch lives meaningfully,” he told officials.

Quoting Swami Vivekananda, the Governor said service to society must be selfless, and true governance lies in aligning every action with this philosophy. He also lauded the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as “a true leader of the nation and the world,” and urged officials to follow his vision for inclusive development.

Among key issues discussed, the Governor called for:

  • Intensifying the Nasha Mukti Abhiyan against substance abuse.
  • Introducing yoga sessions in schools to boost mental and physical well-being.
  • Expanding participation in NCC and NSS to build patriotism and leadership among youth.
  • Supporting the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam plantation drive under the Amrit Brikshya Andolan.

The Governor also reviewed progress on Amrit Sarovar projects, directing officials to ensure basic facilities at the sites. Calling Cachar a district with strong potential for fisheries, he asked for improved hatcheries and better fish seed availability.

On healthcare, Acharya praised the success of the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) and urged wider use of Jan Aushadhi stores for affordable medicines. He also reviewed the TB Mukt Abhiyan, asking officials to intensify the Nikshay Mitra initiative for a tuberculosis-free Assam.

In the education sector, he emphasized strengthening the learning environment and ensuring every child continues schooling without disruption.

Earlier, Mridul Yadav welcomed the Governor and presented a detailed report on the district’s development, covering flagship schemes and infrastructure projects.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Governor Acharya expressed satisfaction with the district’s progress. “I am pleased with the sincerity of officials in implementing welfare schemes. This commitment will accelerate development and ensure benefits reach the last mile,” he said, assuring Raj Bhavan’s full cooperation in timely project execution.

Later in the evening, the Governor chaired a security review meeting with Senior Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta and assessed the law-and-order situation.

On Sunday, Acharya is scheduled to visit Ramakrishna Mission at 9.35 am, followed by Red Cross Children’s Hospital at 10.10 am, before leaving for Guwahati in the afternoon, concluding his two-day tour of Silchar.
