A delegation led by District Mahila Congress president Bandita Trivedi Roy, accompanied by Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress general secretary Nabina Mazumder, submitted a detailed memorandum outlining key problem areas and sought proper care and attention from the civic body to ensure better facilities for the people of Silchar town.
Among the prominent issues raised were:
- Water Scarcity in Greater Malugram – Residents are facing an acute shortage of drinking water due to irregular and insufficient supply without any fixed schedule, leading to a severe crisis.
- Drainage Woes in New Silchar – Poor drainage maintenance, especially along First Link Road, has resulted in frequent waterlogging during rains, causing hardships for locals.
- Unhygienic Market Conditions – Accumulation of garbage around Fatak Bazar, National Highway Bazar, Itkhola Bazar and Tarapur Bazar has created unhygienic conditions. The delegation demanded installation of adequate dustbins and regular garbage clearance.
- Streetlight Failure on New Annapurna Bridge – Non-functional streetlights have encouraged anti-social activities such as drug abuse, gambling and public drinking, posing safety concerns, particularly for women pedestrians.
- Stagnant Water in Several Areas – Improper drainage has led to stagnant rainwater in Sonai Road, Vivekananda Road, Greater Malugram, Itkhola, Ghoniala, Rongpur, New Silchar, College Road, Chenkuri Road and Ashram Road, affecting students and commuters.
- Relocation of Dumping Ground – The dumping ground at Water Works Road is causing serious problems for nearby schools, markets and residents, prompting demands for its immediate relocation.
The delegation urged the SMC to address these issues on a priority basis to ease public inconvenience. They also assured full cooperation and support to the corporation for the development and progress of Silchar.
The memorandum was also forwarded to the District Commissioner, Cachar; Superintendent of Police, Cachar; Assistant General Manager, APDCL Division-I, Silchar; and the Executive Engineer, PHE Division-I, Silchar, for information and necessary action.
