Silchar: Silchar witnessed a remarkable show of civic spirit on Sunday morning as the Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC), under the leadership of Commissioner Srishti Singh, IAS, conducted an intensive cleanliness drive at Annapurna Ghat and Annapurna Bridge in Ward No. 24. The initiative, themed “Swachhata Hi Swatantrata”, turned the riverside into a vibrant scene of community-led environmental action.

The drive began at 7:00 AM and saw wholehearted participation from various stakeholders. Along with the SMC and Shristi Waste Management, over 20 Purosakhis (women community leaders), Safai Mitras (sanitation workers), members of self-help groups including Nilambari SHG, Maa Durga SHG, and Gita Studio, as well as representatives from Padmanagar Jana Kalyan NGO, came together in a unified effort to clean and beautify the area.

SMC Commissioner Srishti Singh, IAS, lauded the public participation, saying, “Cleanliness is not just a municipal function—it reflects our collective mindset and our responsibility toward our environment. What we saw today at Annapurna Ghat was deeply encouraging. This was more than a sanitation drive—it was the awakening of civic consciousness. Swachhata Hi Swatantrata is not merely a slogan; it is a lifestyle.”

The event underscored how community-driven sanitation initiatives can go beyond cleanliness and instill values of dignity, discipline, and freedom in public life. The visible transformation of Annapurna Ghat stood as a testimony to what collective willpower can achieve.

More than just cleared drains and swept roads, the day left behind a stronger sense of community and a renewed commitment to civic duty. As the nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day, Silchar’s efforts send out a powerful message: true freedom begins with awareness, action, and a cleaner tomorrow.
