Calls for urgent intervention to bridge regional connectivity gap and ease travel woes of Barak Valley citizens

New Delhi : In a powerful appeal on the floor of Parliament, Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya brought to national attention the long-standing demand for a direct flight between Silchar and New Delhi. Addressing the Minister of Civil Aviation, Suklabaidya underscored the pressing need to establish seamless air connectivity from this key northeastern city to the national capital ,a demand rooted in both practical necessity and regional equity.
Silchar, a major urban and administrative centre in Assam’s Barak Valley, currently lacks a direct air link to Delhi. Passengers are compelled to travel via Kolkata or Guwahati, enduring prolonged journeys often exceeding five hours. The MP described the situation as not only an inconvenience but also a source of undue financial strain and emotional fatigue for the travelling public, which includes students, critically ill patients, government functionaries, businesspersons, and tourists.
MP ,Suklabaidya stressed that Silchar’s strategic position as a transit point for adjoining states like Mizoram, Tripura, and parts of Meghalaya makes it a crucial node in the region’s transport and communication matrix. The absence of direct connectivity, he argued, hampers not just individual mobility but the broader goals of regional development, trade, and healthcare access.

Calling the move essential for advancing the Government’s UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, Suklabaidya asserted that a direct Silchar–Delhi flight would democratize air travel, reduce travel time, and bring the remote Barak Valley closer to the national mainstream. “This is not just about convenience, it is about fairness, accessibility, and national integration,” the MP stated, urging the Civil Aviation Ministry to take prompt and positive action.
With his intervention,MP Parimal Suklabaidya has reignited a vital conversation around balanced infrastructure development in the Northeast and the importance of connecting India’s remote regions directly to its capital.
