Silchar: In a strong move to uphold civic hygiene and restore public discipline, the Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) conducted a surprise inspection at Itkhola Bazar under Ward No. 3 on Saturday morning. The team caught several residents in the act of dumping household waste along the roadside, despite repeated warnings.
The bustling market area has been grappling with heaps of rotting garbage over the past few weeks, with locals carelessly disposing of domestic waste in public spaces. Following complaints of ongoing violations, SMC officials descended on the area and took immediate action against the offenders.
On-the-spot notices were issued, and the violators were clearly warned that any repeat offence would attract a fine of Rs 2,000 under the Swachh Bharat Mission guidelines. The officials also highlighted the serious health hazards posed by such unsanitary practices and urged citizens to utilise door-to-door garbage collection services and designated waste bins.
“This is not just about sanitation it’s about civic responsibility,” said one of the officials. “Public spaces are meant for everyone, not for dumping garbage. If awareness doesn’t work, we will strictly enforce penalties.”
The drive evoked a mixed response from the public. While many welcomed the initiative as long overdue, others quietly withdrew from the scene. Several shopkeepers and passers-by expressed support for the cleanliness campaign, vowing to discourage littering among peers and customers.
Wrapping up the drive, SMC officials reiterated that a cleaner Silchar is a collective duty. As their message echoed through the marketplace “Public spaces are for all, not for garbage. Act responsibly” the urgency of the campaign left a clear impression on the morning crowd.
