Silchar :Silchar Municipality has officially been upgraded to a Municipal Corporation. On Monday, Rajya Sabha MP Konad Purkayastha inaugurated the new corporation office. The Assam government had announced this upgrade on November 28, 2022. Elections for the new Municipal Corporation are expected in October this year, and a draft voter list has already been released.

Inauguration was attended by TMC MP Sushmita Dev, Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, and others. Speaking at the event, MP Purkayastha called it a historic day for Silchar residents and said the upgraded civic body will offer modern public services. The original municipal committee was formed in 1882 under British rule and became a municipality in 1913. Now, the number of wards has increased from 28 to 42.
