KRC TIMES Barak Valley Bureau

Silchar : In a moving tribute to those who keep the city clean and functional every single day, the Silchar Municipal Corporation celebrated “NAMASTE” Day on Wednesday at its conference hall, honouring the vital contributions of its sanitation workers fondly referred to as Safai Mitros.

Organised under the leadership of newly appointed Commissioner Srishti Singh, IAS, and Executive Officer Nabuttom Sharma, ACS, the event was marked by emotion, appreciation, and a strong civic message. It showcased the administration’s resolve to ensure dignity, health, and inclusivity for all segments of its workforce particularly those whose efforts often go unnoticed.

Partnering with the Shrishti Waste Management Team, the Municipal Corporation conducted a range of thoughtfully curated activities from a heartfelt felicitation ceremony to health check-up camps, distribution of PPE kits, and a vibrant handwashing awareness campaign. The entire programme served as a reminder that respect and recognition are just as important as infrastructure when it comes to building a healthy city.

“Our Safai Mitros are the quiet guardians of Silchar’s health and dignity,” said Commissioner Srishti Singh in her address. “Today, and every day, they deserve our highest respect and gratitude. This ‘NAMASTE’ Day is not just an event, it is a reminder that our appreciation for their contribution should extend far beyond a single day.”

Applause and emotional moments punctuated the day as workers stood proudly at the centre of attention. For many, it was the first time their efforts were acknowledged so publicly and warmly.

As the programme drew to a close, what remained was a powerful message: that a city is defined not just by its roads and buildings, but by the hands that sweep its streets, the hearts that serve it silently, and the leadership that values them.

The event was hailed as a milestone initiative by the Regional Office of Information & Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone, which released an official statement commending the Corporation’s inclusive approach and people-first governance.
