Silchar: The Barak Entertainment Society has announced a year-long celebration to mark the birth centenary of legendary filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak, beginning November 4. Recognized as one of the most remarkable figures in Indian cinema, Ghatak’s films remain a profound reflection of cultural heritage and human experience.

Despite his monumental contributions, Ghatak did not receive full recognition during his lifetime. Known for his original vision and uncompromising dedication to filmmaking, his work often explored the pain and displacement caused by the Partition of India.

Anguish, protest, and the harsh realities of life are central themes in his cinematic universe. His artistic approach, blending sharp analysis with creative innovation, has created a unique cinematic theory that continues to influence filmmakers and scholars alike.

The Barak Entertainment Society believes that Ghatak’s work is essential viewing for today’s generation of artists, students, and cultural practitioners. His contemplative mind, rebellious spirit, and commitment to art offer inspiration and guidance for engaging with the cultural and artistic landscape of Bengal and India.

The centenary celebrations will include panel discussions, film screenings, and still photography exhibitions. The society plans to extend the events across the valley and seeks the support of local organizations, including Silchar’s ‘Beekshan Cine Commune’ and Sribhumi’s ‘Ritwij Cine Society.’ University and college faculties, students, and cultural groups have also been invited to participate.

The inaugural event will take place at the Madhyashahar Cultural Organisation auditorium on November 4 at 5 pm. The discussion will focus on “Ritwik Ghatak’s Perception of Partition,” followed by a screening of Meghe Dhaka Tara and a still photography exhibition highlighting Ghatak’s philosophy and cinematic vision.

The centenary celebrations are being curated and supported by a distinguished panel of cultural figures, including Dr. Ajay Roy, Manoj Deb, Buddha Das, Dr. Rajkumar Mazinder, Mrityunjay Das, Krishanu Bhattacharjee, Tapojyoti Das, Satyajit Gupta, Mashurul Bari, Dr. Smriti Paul, Dr. Himadri Shekhar Das, Swapna Kar, Dipankar Dasgupta, and Prashanta Bhattacharjee
