Demands Action on Safety and Road Conditions
KRC TIMES Barak Valley Bureau
Silchar: The Silchar Truck Drivers’ Association on Tuesday dissolved its old body and formed a new 31-member committee to represent truckers across the Barak Valley.
The association said the new leadership will press the government to address persistent issues faced by drivers, including poor road conditions, lack of emergency support, and harassment on duty.
Truckers noted that despite playing a crucial role in moving goods to states such as Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya, Haflong, and Nagaland, they are often denied respect. Many face assaults from the public, mistreatment by authorities, and delays in ambulance services during accidents.
They stressed that crumbling roads in the valley force drivers to risk their lives every day, making safe transport increasingly difficult.
The association has appealed to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and local authorities to ensure protection and dignity for drivers. Leaders of the new committee vowed to continue pushing for the rights and safety of truckers in the region.
