Guwahati: Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday inaugurated two landmark urban infrastructure projects in Guwahati—the Gateway of Guwahati Terminal and Jetty, and the Brahmaputra Riverfront–Sati Radhika Shaanti Udyan.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the projects reflect the government’s vision to revitalise Assam’s riverine transport system and reconnect the city with the Brahmaputra through sustainable and inclusive urban development.

Addressing the gathering, Sitharaman said the initiatives mark a major step towards strengthening multimodal connectivity while preserving Assam’s cultural identity through modern planning. She described the Gateway of Guwahati Terminal as a “symbol of Assam’s forward-looking growth,” designed to boost river transport, promote tourism, and open new avenues for economic activity.

Speaking about the Brahmaputra Riverfront project, the Minister said it reconnects the people of Guwahati with the river, blending traditional values with contemporary transformation.

She appreciated the Assam Government’s efforts to protect local livelihoods during project implementation, noting that the Uzan Bazar fish market had been retained within the riverfront area, with a separate access route for fishermen.

Highlighting the efficiency of water transport, Sitharaman pointed out that one litre of fuel can move a 24-ton cargo one kilometre by road, 85 kilometres by rail, and up to 105 kilometres by waterways.

The Finance Minister also lauded the effective collaboration between the Centre and the Assam Government, observing that the State has made strong use of interest-free loans under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment Scheme.

She said the two projects embody the shared vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to build a developed India by 2047 through inclusive and sustainable growth.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the inauguration of the Gateway of Guwahati Terminal as a milestone in expanding Assam’s water transport network and strengthening multimodal infrastructure. He expressed gratitude to the Union Minister for her continued support toward the State’s development initiatives.

Sitharaman also interacted with Self-Help Group members managing stalls and shops at the new terminal. The event was attended by State Ministers, senior officials, and dignitaries.
