Clears encroachments and pushes for organized trade

Silchar : The Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has launched a citywide eviction drive to clear illegal encroachments and unauthorized shops from public spaces. Carried out with Shrishti Waste Management, the effort is aimed at reclaiming footpaths, easing traffic flow, and improving the city’s overall look and safety.
SMC Commissioner Srishti Singh, IAS, who oversaw the drive, said that clearing footpaths is central to making Silchar safer and more livable. “Encroachment-free roads are essential for both public convenience and civic responsibility,” she noted.
Alongside the eviction exercise, officials visited recently added municipal areas such as Rongpur and Kolartal to meet business owners and stress the need for valid trade licenses. Traders were told that licenses are not just paperwork but provide legal recognition, boost credibility, and help build a more orderly commercial environment.
The Clean and Safe Silchar Mission reflects SMC’s broader goal of sustainable urban management—where lawful business practices and encroachment-free streets go hand in hand with development and livability.
This comes just months after the Silchar Municipal Board was upgraded to the Silchar Municipal Corporation, officially inaugurated on June 30 by Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha in the presence of district officials, MLAs, and other dignitaries—a step seen as the beginning of a new chapter in urban governance for Barak Valley.
