Silchar: The Silchar Municipal Corporation has issued a strict advisory to banquet halls, hotels, restaurants, godowns and other bulk waste generators, asking them to follow waste management rules during the ongoing festive and wedding season.

The civic body said it has noticed a rise in garbage being dumped along roads, drains and open spaces, which is hurting public hygiene and sanitation.

The Corporation has warned that any establishment found violating waste disposal norms will face heavy penalties. Under the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, 2022, fines can go up to one lakh rupees, and legal action may follow in serious cases. Officials said careless dumping not only disrupts civic order but also undermines efforts to keep the city clean.

All establishments generating bulk waste have been asked to coordinate with the Corporation for timely collection and scientific disposal. These services will be provided as per existing guidelines and user charges. The SMC’s enforcement team has been authorised to carry out inspections without prior notice, and any lapses will attract immediate action.

The advisory was issued in the interest of public safety and environmental health. The Corporation has urged event organisers and commercial units to act responsibly and support the city’s waste management system. For coordination, establishments may contact Panna Lal Deb, Municipal Inspector (9101293214), or Rajiv Chanda, City Project Officer, SBM (U) (6002568070).

Reaffirming its goal of a cleaner city, the SMC called for full cooperation from all stakeholders to maintain cleanliness and civic discipline during the festive period.
