Contest from Upper Assam if you’re a true Assamese

GUWAHATI : Trinamool Congress MP Sushmita Dev has openly challenged Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to contest the upcoming elections from Dibrugarh, Jorhat, or Tinsukia instead of his home constituency, Jalukbari.

“If he wins from these places, then we will accept him as a true Assamese,” Dev said during her visit to the Sribhumi district commissioner’s office.  She also accused the BJP-led state government of failing to identify illegal foreigners in Assam despite being in power for a decade.

“With just six months left for the 2026 elections, the CM is suddenly remembering this issue. The truth is, he is losing ground and that’s why he is targeting the poor with eviction drives,” she alleged.

MP Sushmita’s remarks come a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam of spreading a divisive agenda targeting linguistic communities. “To threaten citizens, who want to coexist peacefully while respecting all languages and religions, with persecution for upholding their mother tongue is discriminatory and unconstitutional,” Banerjee had said.
