Tura: Allegations of illegal uranium extraction in the Garo Hills have reignited controversy in Meghalaya, with the state BJP accusing certain groups of engaging in covert mining operations.

Meghalaya BJP Vice President Bernard N. Marak has submitted a report to the Centre detailing the alleged illegal activities, warning of potential environmental and safety hazards. The report, prepared by a fact-finding committee led by Marak, claims that advance tip-offs before official raids have allowed operators to evade detection, hinting at a possible nexus between officials and local traders.

According to the committee’s preliminary findings, uranium is reportedly being transported in small quantities by private parties using high-end vehicles to bypass monitoring systems. Villagers in the affected areas have also reported sightings of vehicles allegedly carrying uranium ore.

Marak has urged central authorities to conduct a wider investigation into the matter, citing the seriousness of the allegations.

Meanwhile, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has maintained its firm stance against uranium mining in Meghalaya, continuing to deny No Objection Certificates for such projects.

The issue has also drawn judicial attention, with the Supreme Court directing the Meghalaya government to submit a detailed report on steps taken to curb illegal mining, calling it the “last chance” before stronger measures are imposed.
