Algapur : The Chandipur TE–Bhatirkupa PWD Road, a vital rural road under the Algapur Block of Hailakandi district, connecting Bashbari Bagan (Tetultala point ) to Bhatirkupa Choudhury Bazar, has plunged into a severely dilapidated condition.
According to local residents, no repair work has been carried out for nearly a decade. During the monsoon, the road becomes nearly unusable, with pedestrians especially school-going children struggling to walk through the muddy and slippery surface. Many children have reportedly fallen and sustained injuries, sparking growing concern and anger among parents.

This road is a lifeline for hundreds of students and daily commuters from Chandipur T E Grant, Bashbari Grant, Bartowar, Afla, Khas, Tetultal, and Bashbari Part 2 and 1 , Baliakandi Grant areas. It is also the main route for tea garden workers, patients, traders, and office-goers.
However, the road’s sand-gravel layer has worn off, and deep potholes have formed, which turn into waterlogged pits with the slightest rainfall. Vehicular movement comes to a halt, and people are forced to risk their safety just to walk.
In medical emergencies, patients have to be carried manually due to the road’s inaccessibility to ambulances.
In light of the growing public distress, the Rural Development and Social Service Organisation (RDSSO) has submitted a memorandum urging immediate action.

The appeal was led by Shamim Choudhury (Bapan), Kartik Kalindi, Sanat Kalindi, Santush Mal, Rontu Singh, and Shahed Alam Choudhury, with support from Barak Rural Development and Social Service Forum (BRDSSF) Director Bapan Das, former Bashbari GP President’s representative Moynul Choudhury, and Chandipur GP AP Member Sanjay Gaur, among many other concerned citizens.
They have sought urgent intervention from the district administration, the Public Works Department, local MLA Nizam Uddin Choudhury, and Member of Parliament Kripanath Mallah.According to residents, partial repairs were undertaken about twenty years ago under the Assam State Roads Project, and a concrete bridge over the Jita river was constructed ten years back with the initiative of then-MLA Mandira Roy.
Since then, there has been no progress on road development. The community insists that the Chandipur TE–Bhatirkupa PWD Road, officially listed under the department’s records, must not remain a name on paper it must be rebuilt and restored to ensure the safety and mobility of rural citizens, especially children and the working class.
