Silchar: Residents of Vivekananda Road have urged the Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to reopen drainage outlets in Lanes 24, 25, 27 and 28, pointing to years of severe waterlogging during the monsoon.

In a memorandum to the Commissioner, they said the problem has persisted for 8–10 years. While the PWD constructed new drains in 2024, residents allege miscreants later blocked several existing outlets.

They noted that Lane 24 had served as the main outlet used by SMC in 2023–24, but it has since been diverted to the backside, leaving the front completely blocked. The closure, they said, is both inconvenient and illegal.

Lane 7, which connects the entire locality, remains submerged for much of the rainy season. With Durga Puja approaching, residents warned the situation could worsen, especially since Lane 7 houses a 60-year-old Shiv Mandir where the festival is celebrated each year.

The memorandum, signed by about 40 residents, called on the SMC to act immediately to restore the outlets and provide relief to affected households.
