Borkhola: The Sociology Department of Government Model College, Borkhola, unveiled the third edition of its annual wall magazine Sangbid on Friday, marking the occasion with a lecture programme attended by students, faculty, and invited guests.
Prof. M. Gangabhushan Molankal of Assam University’s Department of Social Work, who also serves as programme officer of the NSS, delivered the keynote address as chief guest. Dr. Binay Pal, ICSSR post-doctoral fellow, joined as special guest.
In his welcome speech, department head Dr. Joydeep Goswami set the tone for the programme. Faculty members Dr. Baharul Alam Laskar and Dr. M. Rahman spoke about the college’s activities and future vision.
Prof. Gangabhushan’s lecture on National Integration, National Identity: Language, Geography, Ethnicity urged students to rise above narrow self-interest and embrace social responsibility. He cautioned against excessive reliance on mobile phones, warning of growing social detachment. Quoting Vivekananda, Gandhi, and Tagore, he highlighted values of empathy, courage, and honesty, closing his talk with verses of Tagore and a Kishore Kumar song.
The programme, conducted by assistant professor Chanda Medhi, also featured an interactive session with students. A two-minute silence was observed in memory of singer Zubeen Garg, whose death was reported during the event.
This year’s Sangbid focuses on Digital Transformation in Rural India. Prof. Gangabhushan praised the initiative and commended the students’ efforts behind the publication.
Although principal was away on official duty in Guwahati, he conveyed his greetings and congratulated the department. The event ended with a vote of thanks by assistant professor Dr. Ayesha Afsana, followed by the National Anthem.
