Workshop on Indian Historiography begins at Gurucharan University

Silchar: A three-day workshop and 30-hour internship on Indian Historiography began on Thursday at Gurucharan University, organised jointly by the Department of History and the Indian Council of Historical Research, Cachar district branch. The programme will continue till Saturday in the university’s conference hall.

The workshop opened with the state anthem of Assam sung by the late singer Zubeen Garg, observed as a heartfelt tribute to the beloved artiste.

Eminent historians and academicians from across the region took part in the sessions, engaging in detailed discussions on different approaches to the study of history from an Indian perspective.

Delivering the keynote address, Hemanta Dhing Majumdar, National General Secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Itihas Sankalan Yojana, New Delhi, stressed the importance of writing history rooted in Indian traditions and viewpoints. He underlined the need to recover indigenous heritage and perspectives.

Prof. Suparna Roy of Assam University’s Department of History elaborated on the key aspects of historical study, helping participants gain a deeper understanding of the evolution and expansion of Indian historiography. Dr. Nilanjan Dey, Assistant Professor of History at Sribhumi Rabindrasadan Girls’ College, presented a comparative analysis of nationalist and Marxist historiography, interpreting it from a nationalist perspective.

Gurucharan University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Niranjan Roy, who graced the workshop as chief patron, highlighted the role of such programmes in shaping a new consciousness of history. Head of the Department of History, Rajang Narzary, addressed the students on the academic significance of historical theories in contemporary research.

The closing session and vote of thanks were delivered by Dr. Debangana Nath, Guest Faculty in the Department of History. The workshop was coordinated and conducted by Dr. Abhijit Jaiswal, Assistant Professor in the department.
