Silchar: Tension prevailed in Silchar’s Natunpatty area on Thursday night after a group of youths allegedly vandalised a local eatery, Rajlakshmi Food Centre, around 8 pm.
According to reports, a few youths in an inebriated condition entered the shop, bought some sweets, and began consuming them inside. Soon after, an argument broke out over a minor issue.
Shop owner Dibakar Bhattacharjee and his son Dipanjan Bhattacharjee claimed that despite their efforts to defuse the situation, the youths became increasingly aggressive and started hurling abuses in Assamese. The duo alleged that the attackers threatened them, saying they were “close to the Silchar SSP and Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma” and warned that “no one can live in Assam without speaking Assamese.”
As the altercation intensified, locals gathered at the scene, leading to chaos. The shop’s front glass was reportedly shattered, resulting in significant property damage.
The Bhattacharjee family has lodged a complaint and appealed to the district administration for immediate action, cautioning that inaction could lead to further unrest.
Police were soon deployed to the area to restore calm. District police officials confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the incident.
