Imphal: Senior BJP leader and Singjamei MLA Yumnam Khemchand Singh is gaining fresh attention as Manipur goes through a phase of political uncertainty.

Khemchand Singh was a Cabinet Minister in the second Biren Singh government formed after the 2022 Manipur Assembly election. He served as minister from March 20, 2022, until President’s Rule was imposed in February 2025.

During his tenure, he handled several important departments. These included Municipal Administration and Housing Development, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, and Education. Earlier, he served as Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2022.

Within the BJP, he is known as a strong grassroots organiser. Party leaders often describe him as disciplined and methodical, with solid organisational skills rather than loud political rhetoric.

Before entering active politics, Khemchand Singh was involved in business. He is also deeply connected to sports. A long-time practitioner of traditional Taekwondo, he began training in his youth. Recently, he was awarded the 5th-Dan Black Belt by the Global Traditional Taekwondo Federation in Seoul, South Korea. The rank reflects decades of practice and commitment.

He has also played a role in promoting the sport in the region. He earlier served as Vice President of the Taekwondo Federation of India and was associated with the early growth of the sport in the Northeast.

Political observers see Khemchand Singh as a non-polarising leader. He is considered acceptable across party factions at a time when Manipur’s leadership structure is under discussion.

As talks on political realignment continue, his calm style, administrative experience, and low-profile authority are making him a serious name in current leadership conversations.
