Tamenglong : The first flocks of Amur falcons (locally known as Akhuaipuina or Tamuanpui) have arrived in Guangram village, marking the start of their annual stopover in Manipur’s Tamenglong district.
Every year between October and November, thousands of these migratory birds travel from Siberia to Southern Africa, using Tamenglong as a key roosting site. Since 2015, the Forest Department, NGOs, and local communities have been working together to protect them through awareness drives and hunting bans.
This year, the Manipur Forest Department and the Wildlife Institute of India will tag three more falcons with satellite transmitters to track their journey. Officials say the conservation success in Tamenglong shows how people and nature can thrive together.
Chiuluan and Guangram remain the district’s most important roosting sites.
