Guwahati : Guwahati was engulfed in grief on Sunday as thousands lined the streets to bid farewell to Assam’s beloved singer Zubeen Garg, whose mortal remains arrived from Delhi in the early morning.
The flower-decked coffin, accompanied by his wife Garima Saikia Garg, was carried in a convoy from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport to his Kahilipara residence, before being placed at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex for public homage. Along the 25-km route, fans showered flowers, waved gamosas embroidered with “Z G Forever,” and sang his songs while chanting “Jai Zubeen da.”
The emotional procession included Garg’s favourite open jeep, a large portrait, and members of his band. Top police officials cleared the way as crowds, some in tears, captured the final journey on their phones.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Pabitra Margherita, and senior officials paid respects at the airport. Meanwhile, the Assam Cabinet is meeting to decide the cremation venue.
Zubeen Garg, who recorded over 38,000 songs in 40 languages, was hailed as one of Northeast India’s greatest cultural icons. His untimely death in Singapore has left fans devastated, with many describing the farewell as not just the loss of a singer, but the departure of a voice that defined a generation.
