Sribhumi : The proposal to rename Karimganj district as Sribhumi sparked intense tension in Badarpur on Saturday. A section of students and local residents strongly protested against this decision.
The border district of Sribhumi saw a partial response to the 12-hour bandh on Saturday, called by the Karimganj Zila Naam Paribartan Pratirudh Samiti against renaming Karimganj to Sribhumi.
While offices, schools, and courts remained open, passenger vehicles stayed off roads. Tensions flared as bandh supporters, mostly students, clashed with BJP, VHP, and Bajrang Dal workers. Police used lathi-charge in Badarpur, detaining several women and protesters.
The bandh was backed by Congress, Left parties, and the Citizens’ Committee, who termed it a “success.” However, the administration, which imposed Section 163 BNSS to curb gatherings, and ruling BJP said normal life continued in most areas.
Local MLA Kamalakhaya Dey Purkayastha claimed only a small group opposed the renaming, while Congress argued the bandh reflected wider anger. Despite political tension, the bandh’s impact remained limited.
