Silchar: The Cachar district committee of the Kaibarta Samaj Kalyan Mancha on Monday met Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma at the Police Guest House in Silchar and submitted a memorandum seeking steps to honour the sentiments and aspirations of the people of Barak Valley, particularly the Kaibarta community.

The memorandum, signed by Mancha president Dr. Pallab Das, highlighted four key demands:

Creation of Kaibarta Development Council

The Mancha urged the government to set up a dedicated Kaibarta Development Council with adequate administrative and financial powers. The council, they argued, would promote socio-economic upliftment through employment schemes, skill development, entrepreneurship support, and improved access to government benefits. It would also work for the preservation of cultural heritage, provide social security, and ensure proper representation of the community in development projects.

Statues of the 11 Language Martyrs

The organization demanded the installation of statues of the 11 martyrs of the May 19, 1961 language movement at prominent locations in Silchar. The Mancha said such memorials would keep alive the memory of the martyrs and inspire younger generations about their historic sacrifice.

Rani Rasmoni Road and Statue

Another demand was to name a prominent road in the Chirukandi-National Highway area as “Rani Rasmoni Avenue” in recognition of her contributions to Indian history and the Kaibarta community. They also proposed installing her statue at the Ashram Road Tri-Junction.

Verification of SC Certificates

Expressing concern over alleged misuse of Scheduled Caste certificates by individuals from non-SC backgrounds, the Mancha sought the formation of a commission to verify and cancel such fraudulent certificates. They emphasized that the body should include respected representatives from different socio-cultural groups to ensure fairness.

The Mancha leaders said these demands carry deep emotional, cultural, and historical significance for the people of Barak Valley. They urged the Chief Minister to take necessary initiatives for their implementation.
