Tezpur: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, warning of what he calls a deepening institutional crisis at Tezpur University and urging immediate intervention to protect the institution’s academic standards and administrative credibility.
In his representation, Gogoi said the situation at the central university has reached an alarming point. He reminded the Prime Minister that the university was established under the Assam Accord to advance the state’s educational aspirations, yet is now struggling with administrative, academic and financial turmoil.
Gogoi pointed to allegations of financial irregularities, misuse of public funds, repeated administrative lapses and a lack of transparent governance. He also cited the university’s steady slide in NIRF rankings, widespread faculty vacancies, stalled recruitment and growing dissatisfaction among students and staff. Taken together, he said, these issues show a clear decline in the university’s functioning and academic environment.
The MP also referred to a controversy that erupted after the death of Assam’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg. The Vice Chancellor’s remarks and the administration’s failure to observe the state’s mourning period sparked strong reactions among students and the public.
The unrest eventually prompted the Sonitpur district administration to order a magisterial inquiry, a move Gogoi said reflects eroding trust between the campus community and the university leadership.
He further cited complaints from the Tezpur University Teachers’ Association, which has alleged a series of institutional failures. These include the Vice Chancellor’s long absence from campus without formally delegating authority, irregularities in appointments and extensions, opaque procurement practices, substandard new infrastructure and delays in key academic decisions. Gogoi argued that these are signs of systemic breakdown, not isolated lapses.
Stating that the ongoing deterioration undermines the university’s founding vision and weakens the hopes of Assam’s youth, Gogoi urged the Prime Minister to order a comprehensive review of Tezpur University’s operations. He said that restoring transparency and fixing administrative inconsistencies is essential to preserve the reputation of one of the Northeast’s leading central universities.
