Agartala: The Ministry of Railways has launched the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to modernise railway stations with better passenger facilities and upgraded infrastructure across the country.

The plan follows a phased approach. Each selected station is being redesigned through a detailed master plan. Focus areas include easier station access, improved waiting halls and toilets, lifts and escalators where needed, cleaner surroundings and free Wi Fi services.

The redevelopment also brings in modern passenger information systems, executive lounges, spaces for meetings, better landscaping and upgraded station buildings. The scheme supports local livelihoods through ‘One Station One Product’ kiosks that allow small entrepreneurs to showcase regional goods.

The initiative is making strong progress in the Northeast under the Northeast Frontier Railway zone. A total of 92 stations have been selected in this zone. Out of these, 60 are in the Northeast region. Assam accounts for 50 stations, while Tripura has four. Sikkim, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland have one station each under the scheme.

In Assam, Haibargaon railway station became the first completed station under the programme. It was inaugurated in May 2025 by Narendra Modi. The station blends modern design with local culture and offers improved facilities for all passengers including Divyangjan.

Work is moving ahead at several other stations. Fakiragram has reached 88 percent progress, Kokrajhar 78 percent, Dhubri 80 percent and Gauripur 82 percent. Majbat stands at 98 percent completion and Viswanath Chariali at 97 percent. Chaparmukh has recorded 85 percent progress, while North Lakhimpur and Simaluguri Junction are both at 65 percent.

In Meghalaya, Mendipathar railway station has achieved 73 percent redevelopment progress.

Officials said the scheme is expected to boost employment, support local businesses and make travel more comfortable, while also keeping the cultural identity of the region alive.
