Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said there is “no penicillin or antibiotic” to address the demographic changes that have taken place in the state, asserting that people have only two options “either surrender or keep fighting.”

Speaking on the issue, Sarma referred to what he described as a significant demographic shift in Assam over the years. He claimed that Hindus currently constitute around 60 per cent of the state’s population, while Muslims make up approximately 36 per cent, adding that the situation was different in the past.

The Chief Minister further stated that large-scale migration has altered the demographic balance in several districts of the state.

His remarks come amid ongoing political debates around illegal immigration and its perceived impact on Assam’s social and electoral landscape, a key issue ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
