Silchar: A woman from Saraspur in Gumra died at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) on Sunday, just hours after giving birth, triggering allegations of medical negligence by her family.
The deceased, identified as Sujala Das, wife of Pijush Kanti Das, had been referred to SMCH from a health centre in Kalain and was admitted on Saturday evening. According to family members, doctors had advised a normal delivery, which was carried out.
Her husband alleged that her condition worsened soon after childbirth, but the family was not informed in time. He claimed that despite repeated requests, he was not allowed to meet her, and that nurses prevented access. Sujala was later shifted to the ICU, where she died due to complications following delivery.
The incident led to tension within the hospital premises, with agitated family members demanding accountability. Police and district administration officials intervened to control the situation. Sadar Circle Officer Kaustav Das and the Additional Superintendent of Police, Cachar, were present at the scene.
The family has demanded strict action against the doctors and staff of the gynaecology ward, alleging negligence in treatment. Hospital authorities had not issued an official statement at the time of filing this report.
