Silchar: Cachar district has ranked last among all 33 districts of Assam in the HSLC Examination 2026, posting a pass percentage of just 49.13%, raising serious concerns over the state of school education in the region.

Out of a total of 25,961 students who appeared for the examination, only 12,755 managed to pass, reflecting a poor overall performance.

The results also exposed a worrying trend across several schools in the district. As many as 22 schools recorded a zero pass percentage, while 10 schools reported less than 10% success rate. Additionally, 28 schools remained below the 20% mark, indicating widespread academic challenges.

One of the most striking cases was Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School in Silchar, where only 1 out of 29 students passed, resulting in a pass percentage of just 3.45%.

Despite the grim figures, there was a slight positive note. Around 40 schools in the district achieved a 100% pass rate, offering some relief and highlighting pockets of strong performance.

Education experts say the sharp gap between high-performing and low-performing schools needs urgent attention, with calls for better monitoring, teacher support, and student-focused interventions.
