Guwahati: In a proud moment for Assam and the Northeast, Dr. Atanu Nath has been awarded the 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, one of the world’s most prestigious honours in science, often called the “Oscars of Science.”

Dr. Nath has been recognised for his contributions to the Muon g−2 experiments conducted at leading global research centres including CERN, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Fermilab. The award is shared with a global team of 376 scientists who worked on the groundbreaking research.

Originally from Hailakandi district in Assam, Dr. Nath is currently serving as an Assistant Professor at Tihu College in Nalbari. His achievement marks a historic milestone, as he becomes the first scientist from Northeast India to receive the Breakthrough Prize in this category.

The Muon g−2 experiment studies the behavior of subatomic particles known as muons, offering deep insights into the fundamental laws of physics. The findings have the potential to challenge existing theories and open doors to new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Dr. Nath’s recognition has sparked widespread celebration across Assam, with the academic community, students, and residents expressing pride in his global accomplishment.
