Assam University Law Department Marks 24 Years with Focus on ‘Law, Legacy and the Future’

Silchar: The Department of Law at Assam University stepped into its 24th year with a two-day pre-silver jubilee celebration titled “Law, Legacy & The Future,” bringing together members of the judiciary and academia to reflect on its journey and future path.

The inaugural session of the event was held on May 1 at the Bipin Chandra Pal Seminar Hall, where speakers highlighted the department’s growth since its establishment in 2003 under the Xth Plan.

Prof. Asoke K. Sen, Vice Chancellor (In-Charge), presided over the programme and congratulated the department for maintaining academic standards over the years.

The event was attended by key figures from the legal fraternity. Debasish Bhattacharjee, Member Secretary of the Assam State Legal Services Authority, joined as Chief Guest. In his address, he stressed the link between legal education and public service. He said institutions like the law department play a key role in helping common people understand and access the justice system, especially through legal aid work.

Among the Special Guests were Bidyabrata Acharyya and Subarna Jyoti Deb, while Juma Sinha attended as Guest of Honour.

Also present on the dais were Prof. Madhumita Dhar Sarkar and Prof. Partha Pratim Paul.

Speakers spoke about how legal practice is changing and urged students to go beyond theory. They stressed the need for practical training and awareness work. The gathering also noted the department’s role in producing legal professionals who are working across the region and the country.
