Shows Nearly 5% Rise: MHA
KRC TIMES Assam Bureau
Guwahati : Assam recorded 3,203 suicide cases in 2024, registering an increase of nearly five per cent compared to 3,051 cases reported in 2023, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The data indicated that family-related problems, love affairs, illness, and marriage-related issues were among the leading causes behind suicides in the state. Hanging remained the most commonly adopted method in such cases.

Among those who died by suicide in Assam during 2024, 2,076 were men while 1,127 were women, the report stated.
The findings also suggested that individuals from economically weaker backgrounds and those with lower educational qualifications were more vulnerable to suicide.
The latest figures reflect a continuing concern over mental health and socio-economic stress factors in the state, with experts often linking suicide trends to financial hardship, emotional distress, family conflicts, and lack of access to mental health support services.
The Ministry of Home Affairs data showed that the year-on-year rise in suicide cases in Assam stood at close to five per cent compared to the previous year.
