Guwahati: Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, mother of Kunki Chowdhury, on Monday said she would file a defamation suit of Re 1 against Himanta Biswa Sarma over what she termed “false allegations” made against her during the Assam Assembly election campaign.

She also demanded a public apology from Sarma, who was sworn in earlier in the day for a second consecutive term as chief minister. The Bharatiya Janata Party and the chief minister had not issued any response till the filing of this report.
In an open letter shared on X, Sujata described herself as a “common woman whose name you repeatedly uttered during your election stint”. She alleged that the remarks made by the BJP leader were driven by “malafide intention” and had caused public humiliation to her and her family.
She further claimed that the allegations not only damaged her reputation but also exposed her family to risk and harassment during the heated poll campaign.
The statement comes amid continuing political tensions between the ruling BJP and the Assam Jatiya Parishad following the recently concluded Assembly elections.
